About Casa Jondal

Over a kilo of caviar leaves this kitchen on a busy August afternoon. Casa Jondal sits on the sand at Cala Jondal on Ibiza's quiet southern coast, and it is run by Rafa Zafra, the chef who came up through the kitchen of elBulli before building his Estimar seafood restaurants in Barcelona and Madrid.

The food is simple in form and extravagant in cost: the best fish and shellfish the boats bring in, treated with restraint, and caviar layered onto almost anything that will hold it. A smoked-salmon-and-caviar bikini runs €110; expect €100 or more per person once the seafood adds up. The Michelin Guide lists the room. For the island's wider map, see our Ibiza dining guide.

The Kitchen

Rafa Zafra's cooking is built on the elBulli idea that the finest product needs the least intervention. Grilled red prawns (gambas de Dénia), oysters topped with caviar at €25, raw and salt-cured fish, and his caviar bikinis are the signatures. There is little plating theatre; the luxury is in the sourcing and the timing of the grill.

Zafra splits his year between Ibiza in summer and his mainland Estimar rooms the rest of the time, and the same hand shows here. For another high-end island seafood table, compare Es Torrent down the coast.

The Room

The setting is a polished beach club rather than a chiringuito: white parasols, linen, bare feet welcome at lunch, and the water a few metres away. There is no thumping soundtrack, which is the point. Lunch service stretches long into the afternoon; the lighting is sunlight, then candlelight as the evening turns. Book the front tables for the view.

Best for an Anniversary

Reserve Casa Jondal for an anniversary because the combination of toes-in-the-sand setting, faultless seafood and a long, unhurried afternoon is hard to beat for a celebration that wants to feel special without being stiff. Arrive for a late lunch and let it run. For more island romance, see our anniversary picks.

Not for

Not for a budget beach lunch or anyone watching the bill; the caviar adds up fast and a relaxed afternoon here clears €100 a head before you have really tried.

Frequently Asked

Is Casa Jondal worth it?

Yes, if you treat it as a splurge rather than a casual lunch. The seafood is among the best on Ibiza, the setting on Cala Jondal is genuinely lovely, and chef Rafa Zafra's elBulli pedigree shows in the precision. The catch is the bill: caviar and prime shellfish push the per-head cost well past €100, so go when the occasion warrants it.

How hard is it to book Casa Jondal?

Hard in peak summer. July and August lunches, especially the front-row tables, book out weeks ahead, and the restaurant takes reservations direct. Shoulder-season dates in June and September are far easier. Reserve as early as you can and ask specifically for a beachfront table.

What should I order at Casa Jondal?

Order the grilled red prawns, the oysters with caviar, and at least one of the caviar bikinis, the smoked-salmon version being the signature at €110. Add a whole grilled fish to share and a bottle of cold Mediterranean white. Let the kitchen steer you toward the day's best catch.

What is the average price at Casa Jondal?

Plan on €80 to €150 or more per person. A relaxed lunch with shellfish, a caviar dish and wine clears €100 a head easily, and that climbs quickly if the caviar keeps coming. It sits firmly at the luxury end of Ibiza's beach dining.

Is Casa Jondal good for an anniversary?

Yes, reserve it for an anniversary lunch. The beachfront setting, the quiet (no club soundtrack) and the long unhurried service make it one of the island's most romantic tables. See our anniversary guide for more.
