About San Marco
San Marco sits on the old stone steps leading up from the main square into the Groda district, a family restaurant in the most literal sense: three generations of the Roki family cook, serve and pour here, and have done since the late 1970s. The tables spill out into the lane; the room inside is small, unpretentious, and completely packed from mid-June through September.
The kitchen is unreconstructed Dalmatian and all the better for it. Black-ink risotto made with whole cuttlefish, the grain loose and the broth deep. Grilled branzino and sea bream from that morning's boats. Gregada — the classic Hvar fish stew with potatoes, capers and white wine — that is essentially the reason the dish exists. Simple grilled lamb chops for anyone who has had enough fish.
Wine is short, Croatian, and priced with old-fashioned decency: a bottle of house Pošip at 28€ that would be 55€ on the waterfront. The family pours generously. Coffee, rakija, and a conversation at the end of dinner are part of the ritual.
A full meal for two with wine runs 100–130€. San Marco is a reminder that Hvar was a fishing island long before it was a yacht stop, and that the food has always been the reason to come.
Why It's Perfect for Team Dinner
San Marco is the team dinner room on the island. Long tables pull together easily, the menu is generous and shareable, the prices are kind enough that nobody feels the bill, and the Rokis treat a six-top the same way they treat a deuce. It is the exact opposite of a performance dinner — which, for a group that has been sharing a boat all week, is usually the correct move.
