About Orchids

The lasagnette arrives early at Orchids, sheets of handmade pasta folded around Kahuku prawns, scallops and avocado, the dish executive chef Christian Testa keeps on because the kitchen has not bettered it. Orchids is the open-air, oceanfront room at the Halekulani on Waikiki's quietest stretch of sand, at 2199 Kalia Road. It has held a AAA Four Diamond rating since 1995 and pours from a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence list. Dinner mains run in the high two figures; the Sunday Sparkling Brunch is $85.

The Kitchen

Christian Testa runs Orchids as Halekulani's all-day oceanfront kitchen, a Mediterranean-leaning menu built on Hawaiian product. The signature lasagnette layers handmade pasta with Kahuku prawns, scallops and avocado; the tenderloin filet comes with a portobello confit, and there is Hudson Valley foie gras under a Barolo reduction and a whole Mediterranean branzino with artichoke and a veal jus. The Sunday Sparkling Brunch, $85 for adults and $45 for children, is the room's institution: garden and market tables, carving stations and free-flowing sparkling wine from 9am to 2pm. Wine is a genuine strength, the list carrying a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, and the room has held its AAA Four Diamond rating since 1995, longer than almost any restaurant in Hawaii. Dinner mains land in the high two figures, below the tasting-menu rooms up the beach. The Room

Orchids opens to the air on the ocean side, looking straight at Diamond Head across the Halekulani's stretch of Waikiki sand. Sound is easy, the trade winds and the surf doing most of the work; lighting is candle-low at dinner and bright at brunch. Tables sit generously spaced on the lanai, and the dress code is resort-smart, no jackets but no flip-flops at dinner either. The room seats around 150 across the terrace and inner dining room. Ask for a railing table at sunset; it is the best seat in Waikiki that does not require a tasting menu.

Best for Proposal

Book Orchids for a proposal because the timing is built in: request a railing table for sunset, when Diamond Head goes pink and the surf comes up under the lanai. The room is open and quiet enough to hear a yes, the staff will happily stage dessert or a glass of Champagne, and the oceanfront setting carries the romance without a three-hour tasting menu locking you in place. It photographs beautifully in the last light. For more options, see the best Honolulu restaurants for a proposal.

Not for

Skip Orchids if you want a hushed, jackets-required fine-dining room: it is open-air, family-friendly at brunch, and the surf and trade winds carry over every table.

Frequently Asked

Is Orchids worth it?

Yes, for the setting as much as the food. Orchids is Halekulani's open-air oceanfront room, AAA Four Diamond since 1995, with Christian Testa's lasagnette and a Wine Spectator-listed cellar. It is not the most ambitious kitchen in Honolulu, but few rooms match the Diamond Head view, and dinner mains stay below the tasting-menu rooms nearby. For an occasion in Waikiki, it earns the booking.

How hard is it to book the Orchids Sunday brunch?

Book the Sunday Sparkling Brunch two to three weeks ahead, more around holidays and graduation season. It runs 9am to 2pm and is the most in-demand seating of the week at $85 for adults and $45 for children. Dinner and weekday lunch are far easier. Reserve on OpenTable or Tock, and ask for a railing table if the view matters.

What is the dress code at Orchids?

Resort-smart. There is no jacket requirement, in keeping with an open-air Waikiki room, but dinner is a step above beachwear: collared shirts, sundresses and closed shoes rather than flip-flops and board shorts. Brunch is more relaxed and family-friendly. The trade winds keep the lanai comfortable, so you rarely need more than a light layer in the evening.

How much does dinner cost at Orchids?

Dinner mains run in the high two figures, with the lasagnette, tenderloin filet and Mediterranean branzino anchoring the menu. The Sunday Sparkling Brunch is a fixed $85 for adults and $45 for children, before tax and gratuity. It sits below La Mer and the tasting-menu rooms up the beach, which makes it one of the better-value oceanfront tables in Waikiki.

Is Orchids good for a proposal?

Yes, it is one of the most reliable proposal rooms in Waikiki. Book a railing table for sunset, when Diamond Head turns pink and the surf rises under the lanai, and the staff will quietly help stage dessert or Champagne. The open-air setting carries the moment without locking you into a long tasting menu, and it photographs beautifully in the last light.
