Bientang's Cave — South African Seafood / Casual Fine Dining, Hermanus

Bientang’s Cave is created out of a traditional cave previously inhabited by a Koi Strandloper of the same name, with the restaurant spilling out onto the rocks of Walker Bay in Hermanus — the world’s best shore-based whale watching destination. The combination of the cave geology, the rock terrace above the whale nursery, and the quality of the seafood makes it one of the most extraordinary natural dining settings anywhere on earth.

The menu features a variety of seafood dishes, sharing platters, fresh salads, hearty potjies and curries, as well as beef, chicken, and vegetarian options, allowing guests to enjoy their meal while watching whales and seals in the ocean below, with a selection of local wines and creative cocktails.

The wine programme draws on the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley producers — the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that have made this one of the Cape’s most celebrated wine regions — alongside the broader Walker Bay and Western Cape selections.

Bientang’s Cave is the restaurant that provides the most extraordinary natural dining experience in Hermanus and one of the most extraordinary in the world: watching Southern Right whales breach in Walker Bay while eating fresh South African seafood in a cave on the rocks.
