About Scharff's Schlossweinstube

Scharff's Schlossweinstube occupies the 16th-century vaulted wine cellar inside Heidelberg Castle, at the foot of the Façadenbauer. The castle itself is partially a romantic ruin (the 1693 French artillery damage is the defining landscape feature) and partially an intact Renaissance palace; the dining room is in the fully preserved wine cellar, reached by descending a 1560 staircase into a vaulted stone chamber with the original wine-barrel alcoves still in the walls. It is, without much argument, the most architecturally dramatic dining room in Germany.

The cooking is contemporary German with strong classical-French foundations. The tasting menu runs 6 or 8 courses at €165 and €225 respectively; the à la carte runs parallel with mains at €48-€68. A typical menu: cured North Sea halibut with a horseradish crème and pickled cucumber; a slow-cooked veal sweetbread with morels and a vin jaune sauce; a dry-aged Pfalz beef tenderloin with Périgord truffle and salsify; and a signature chocolate Marquise with raspberry and basil oil. The kitchen is not adventurous in the Nordic or molecular sense; it does classical work to a high standard.

The wine list is the signature. The cellar runs to more than 700 bottles with a serious Rheingau, Pfalz, and Baden Riesling section, a deep Burgundy programme, and — uniquely for Germany — a historic section of Heidelberg-area Rieslings dating to the 1970s. The service is formal without stiffness; the sommelier is Baden-Württemberg-born and a national wine-competition finalist. Getting up to the castle is itself the occasion: the funicular from the Kornmarkt runs to the castle gate, then a ten-minute walk. Book the 19:30 seating for the best light through the cellar windows.

Why It's Perfect for Proposal

For a Proposal: Scharff's Schlossweinstube is inside Heidelberg Castle. The proposal does not require planning beyond the reservation — the 16th-century vaulted stone chamber, the Romantic ruin above, the Neckar 80 metres below, and the service trained to pace a Champagne toast to a moment all pre-exist. The funicular ride up at dusk doubles as the approach scene. Four hundred years of Heidelberg proposals have happened here.
