Oben

Oben (German for 'above') is the rooftop restaurant on top of a five-storey building on the Kornmarkt, directly below the castle funicular station. The terrace opened in 2015 after the building's rooftop was converted by the Heidelberg Stadtwerke redevelopment. The view is the reason for booking: the castle fills the southern skyline, the Heiliggeistkirche is directly in front of the terrace, and at dusk the castle floodlighting illuminates the entire view on a scale few other terraces match.

The cooking is modern European with a Mediterranean-leaning menu. Five starters, six mains, three desserts, rotating seasonally. In summer: a gazpacho with basil oil and Iberian ham; a burrata with Heirloom tomato and balsamic reduction; a grilled Adriatic octopus with chickpea purée; and a slow-cooked Charolais short rib with polenta. In winter: a chestnut soup with smoked duck; a roasted veal ribeye with salsify and a Pfalz Riesling jus. The kitchen operates at a comfortable 1-Haube Gault Millau level without claiming Michelin ambition.

The indoor dining room is glass-sided, minimal, and open year-round; the terrace above seats forty and is open April to October. The wine list is Baden-Pfalz heavy with an expanding natural-wine section, and the cocktail programme at the bar is the best in Heidelberg. Service is fast and fluent in English. For a First Date in summer, the terrace table at 20:00 is as good as Heidelberg offers.

For a First Date: Oben's rooftop terrace has a direct view of Heidelberg Castle and is the single most photographic first-date setting in the city. The menu is flexible (order a la carte, not a set tasting), the pricing keeps the evening unambitious, and the castle view essentially operates as the first-date conversation. If the date goes well, the Alte Brücke and the Philosophers' Way are a ten-minute walk from the restaurant.
