Bräugasthof Hallstatt

Bräugasthof Hallstatt is housed in the 1472 Seeauer family brewery-inn on the Seestraße, north of the Marktplatz along the lake. The building is the oldest commercial structure in the village — the ground-floor tavern room has low beamed ceilings, original 15th-century stonework, and a lakeside terrace that seats forty in summer with the water metres away. Brewing on-site stopped in the 20th century; the inn and restaurant function has been continuous.

The kitchen is unfussy Austrian-traditional done well. The Brauhaussuppe (brewery-style beef broth with liver dumplings) and the Hallstätter Reinanke (lake whitefish) fillet with browned butter and dill potatoes are the signatures. A Rindsuppe mit Fritatten — the classic Austrian beef broth with pancake strips — is served at lunch. Beef Tafelspitz, Wiener Schnitzel (from Austrian veal, not the imported pork Schnitzel of cheaper tourist kitchens), and an autumn-game menu featuring venison and wild boar hold down the main menu.

The wine list is Austrian-only with a serious Wachau and Styrian selection; the beer is the Zipfer Kellerbier from Upper Austria, which remains the correct drink with any Schnitzel in this region. The tavern room downstairs seats forty across communal benches and is the correct space for a team dinner of 6-12. The guesthouse rooms upstairs (seven in total) are where most returning guests stay on second visits — the village's best combination of location and atmosphere.
