About Gyeongpo Mulhoe
Gyeongpo Mulhoe is one of the fifty-odd raw-fish restaurants lining the Gyeongpo Beach promenade — the long sandy beach east of central Gangneung that the city's tourism map identifies as its primary summer destination. The restaurant has operated since 2002 and is one of the more locally-loved mulhoe specialists on the strip, with a long counter and bay window facing the East Sea horizon.
The signature is the Standard Mulhoe at ₩12,000 — a deep ceramic bowl of chilled fish-bone broth, mixed with gochujang and sesame oil, topped with thin-sliced raw flounder, julienned cucumber and Korean pear, sesame seeds, and a small mound of ice. Diners eat it as a chilled soup-and-noodle hybrid: spoon up the broth and fish, then add the small portion of chilled buckwheat noodle the staff bring for the second half of the meal.
Beyond mulhoe, the restaurant runs a wider Korean coastal menu — grilled clams (₩25,000 a portion, cooked on a tabletop grill), spicy seafood stew haemul-tang (₩45,000 for two), grilled mackerel set (₩15,000), and a hwedeopbap raw-fish-and-rice bowl (₩14,000). Walk-ins always work outside summer-weekend peaks; reservations are not taken.
The room seats eighty across three levels — a casual ground-floor section, a mid-tier with bay windows, and a small rooftop terrace open in summer. The view at sunset is one of the genuine local memories of a Gangneung visit; couples on the rooftop terrace at 7pm in July, eating mulhoe over the East Sea, is a Gangneung postcard image. English menus and basic English at the front-of-house.
Best Occasion Fit
Solo dining in a coastal-cafe city — counter seat with the East Sea horizon, twenty-minute meal, ₩12,000 bill. For team dinners the rooftop terrace absorbs eight in summer evenings. As a first date with a partner visiting Gangneung for the first time, the beach-side setting and the cold-soup format give the meal both an activity and an ambient backdrop.
