About SheWolf Pastificio

Tonnarelli, cut by hand and dressed in nothing but pecorino, black pepper and starchy pasta water — the cacio e pepe at SheWolf is the dish that tells you the kitchen is serious. Anthony Lombardo opened the room in Detroit's Cass Corridor in 2017 and built it around a glass-walled pasta lab that mills its own flour daily.

Hour Detroit named it the 2020 Restaurant of the Year, and Lombardo was a 2019 James Beard semifinalist for Best Chef: Great Lakes. The cooking is modern Roman: the four classic pastas done properly, plus seasonal plates that change often. For the broader field, see our guide to the best Italian restaurants worldwide.

The Kitchen

Lombardo trained in Italy and across fine-dining kitchens before coming home to Detroit, and the technique shows in the pasta program at 438 Selden Street. The kitchen mills flour on site and rolls tonnarelli, bucatini and the rest each day; the four Roman classics — cacio e pepe, amatriciana, carbonara and gricia — are the benchmark dishes. There is an a la carte menu plus a Cucina Curata tasting at $115 per person, with an optional wine pairing for $99.

It is a different register from the city's French old guard at Cuisine. SheWolf is contemporary and pasta-first, closer in spirit to San Morello than to a white-linen room. Order a pasta flight, add a seasonal vegetable plate, and let the carbonara settle the argument. Browse the rest in our Detroit dining guide.

The Room

The space is bright concrete and warm wood, a long bar up front and a dining room that opens onto the pasta lab behind glass. It runs loud on Friday and Saturday — conversation carries but you lean in — with low pendant lighting and tables set close. Dress is smart-casual and nobody checks. Sit at the bar if you are solo or want to watch the pours.

Best for a First Date

Book SheWolf for a first date because the pasta does the work: there is always something to talk about when the cacio e pepe lands, the bar gives you a soft landing if the table runs quiet, and the bill stays sane. Aim for a Tuesday or Wednesday when the room is calmer than the weekend roar. More ideas in our best for a first date guide.

Not for

Not for anyone who wants a quiet table — the bar runs loud on weekends and the pasta counter keeps a brisk pace.

Frequently Asked

Is SheWolf in Detroit worth it?

Yes — SheWolf Pastificio is one of Detroit's best Italian restaurants, named Hour Detroit's 2020 Restaurant of the Year, with chef Anthony Lombardo a 2019 James Beard semifinalist. The draw is house-milled, hand-cut pasta, especially Roman classics like cacio e pepe and carbonara. It is lively rather than hushed, so go for the food and the energy, not a quiet table.

How do I book SheWolf?

SheWolf takes reservations through Tock, with tables released monthly, and weekend slots go quickly after they drop. Walk-in seats at the bar are usually held for pasta and a glass of wine. The kitchen is dinner-only and closed Mondays, so plan a Tuesday-to-Sunday evening.

What is the signature dish at SheWolf?

The signature is the cacio e pepe, made with hand-cut tonnarelli, pecorino, black pepper and pasta water. The kitchen mills its own flour daily and rolls all four Roman classics — cacio e pepe, amatriciana, carbonara and gricia — which are the dishes to judge it on. Seasonal plates round out the menu.

What does dinner cost at SheWolf?

Pasta is a la carte, and there is a Cucina Curata tasting menu at $115 per person with an optional wine pairing for $99. A typical a la carte dinner of a starter, pasta and a glass of wine lands in the upper-moderate range. Reserve the tasting in advance if you want it.

What is the dress code at SheWolf?

Smart-casual, with no formal rule. The Cass Corridor crowd skews stylish but relaxed, and you will be comfortable in jeans and a good jacket. The room runs loud on weekends, so it is dressed-up energy rather than hushed formality.
