Jake's Del Mar

#5 Del Mar Since 1981 Birthday First Date Team Dinner
On the actual sand since 1981. In a 1910 building. Del Mar's most beloved dining room doesn't need to explain itself — the Pacific is right there.

The Experience

The building Jake's occupies was part of the historic Stratford Inn, constructed in 1910. The restaurant itself opened in 1981. This is the kind of provenance that cannot be acquired, only accumulated — and Jake's wears it without effort, the way old California institutions wear their history: lightly, honestly, and with the knowledge that the location alone could not sustain a restaurant across four decades. The kitchen has to earn it every service.

Under Chef Dustin Anselm, the New American menu brings genuine innovation to classic coastal preparations: fresh fish landed by local fishermen, shellfish from the Pacific, premium steaks and chops for guests who arrived facing the wrong direction, and a seasonal rotation that acknowledges California's extraordinary agricultural range without making a sermon of it. The swordfish and sea bass receive frequent praise from regulars who have eaten both enough times to know precisely how they should arrive. The kitchen delivers.

The dining room sits literally on the sand — not metaphorically on the sand, not above the sand, but in the middle of Del Mar Beach, with the Pacific arriving and departing outside the windows like a patient host. Sunday brunch extends the kitchen's range to eggs, grain bowls, and Bloody Marys that make weekend mornings worth planning around. The service is warm in the way that beachfront institutions get warm: genuine rather than performed, hospitable rather than deferential.

Happy hour runs weekdays with reduced prices on small plates and drinks. The bar programme is competent and the cocktail list California-appropriate — plenty of light, citrus-forward options that complement the seafood without competing with the view.

Best Occasion Fit

Jake's handles birthday dinners and group celebrations better than almost anywhere in Del Mar — the combination of the landmark setting, warm service, and a broadly appealing menu means that tables of eight can be satisfied without negotiation. The beach location is inherently festive; the 1981 provenance gives the celebration a sense of place that newer restaurants can't replicate. For first dates, the beach setting does the work: the Pacific at sunset is genuinely one of the great dining backdrops in Southern California. For team dinners, the accommodating menu and relaxed atmosphere give a group of colleagues room to relax rather than impress.
