The Room

Le Chalet is a small wooden-chalet bistro on Huynh Thuc Khang road, directly opposite the Hang Nga Guesthouse. The room seats around forty; the ground floor has a fireplace that is lit most evenings in the cool Dalat nights, and the walls are lined with framed black-and-white photographs of French Indochine. The aesthetic is warm, unfussed, authentic.

The menu is a tight French bistro — escargots, onion soup, duck rillettes, steak frites, steak au poivre, coq au vin, crêpes Suzette. Nothing on the menu is overreaching; everything is executed with the quiet confidence of a chef who has been cooking the same repertoire for fifteen years. The steak frites and the coq au vin are the canonical orders.

The wine list is short and entirely French — around forty bottles, heavy on Côtes du Rhône and Loire whites, priced very fairly. The restaurant also makes its own house vermouth and stocks a small range of French digestifs.

Dinner runs $30 to $50 per head with wine. Walk-ins are usually possible but reservations via Facebook or phone are advisable for weekend dinner. The restaurant also serves a classical French breakfast from 8am.

Why It's Best for First Date

For a First Date, Le Chalet's candlelit chalet, fireplace, and small-room intimacy create exactly the warm, unpretentious atmosphere that first dates benefit from. The food is universally appealing and the pricing is permissive. This is the Dalat date venue for diners who prefer warmth over grandeur.
