The Verdict
Nén Danang opened in 2023 in the An Thuong beach quarter, a short walk from My Khe Beach, under chef Summer Le. The restaurant seats 20 across a chef's counter (eight seats) and four tables behind. The kitchen runs two services nightly — 6pm and 8:30pm — with a single 12-to-15-course tasting menu that changes monthly. The Saigon parent restaurant holds one Michelin star; the Da Nang expansion was included in the 2024 guide's selection.
The menu centres on central Vietnamese and Central Highlands produce — the chef's home-region ingredients rather than the Saigon south. A typical evening: an amuse of rice crackers with Central Highlands chili jam; a seasonal broth (Central Highlands chicken in winter, clam and tamarind in summer); cured local fish with fermented bean; Son Tra river prawn with palm sugar caramel; a grilled pork belly course referencing the nem lui tradition; the Hoi An-style pork-and-rice intermediate; and desserts built around pandan, young rice, and tropical fruit.
Pricing runs VND 2,800,000–3,400,000 per person with the non-alcoholic pairing, VND 4,200,000 with wine. The non-alcoholic pairing — fermented fruit juices, kombuchas, rice-milk based preparations — is one of the most interesting in Southeast Asia. Reservations require a deposit and are handled exclusively through the restaurant's website or Facebook. 6pm seating is more light-driven; 8:30pm is darker and more intimate.
Why It Works for First Date
Nén opened in Saigon in 2019 as the most intellectually-serious Vietnamese tasting-menu restaurant in the country; the Da Nang sister room, opened 2023, brings the same discipline north and applies it to central Vietnamese produce specifically. The chef's-counter seating (eight seats facing the pass) is the form; 12 to 15 courses is the length; and every course is locally-sourced enough to warrant its own story.
Signature Dishes
Central Highlands chicken broth; river prawn with palm sugar; bonito-cured local fish; pandan ice cream.
