The Dependable Italian on the Avenue

Il Fornaio — the West Coast Italian group with locations from Seattle to Del Mar — opened its Coronado restaurant in one of the Village's most beautiful waterfront buildings. For reasons that include both the setting and the consistent kitchen output, the Coronado outpost has become the group's reference location in Southern California. The building, with its arched windows and terracotta tiling, reads less like a chain restaurant and more like a carefully appointed neighbourhood institution — which is essentially what it functions as.

The kitchen's approach is Northern Italian rather than Southern — more Piedmont and Lombardy than Campania and Sicily — meaning an emphasis on risotto, handmade pasta, wood-fired proteins, and dishes that showcase butter and olive oil in balance rather than tomato-heavy preparations. The bread is baked on site each morning, which is visible from any seat in the restaurant and has been Il Fornaio's signature programme across all locations for decades. The pasta is made in-house daily, and the wood-fired oven handles proteins from lamb to swordfish with the kind of easy competence that comes from long-running systems.

The wine programme leans on Italian producers with a reasonable representation of California bottles at comparable price points. The cocktail bar does a better Negroni than most Italian restaurants outside major cities. The pastry programme — handled by the group's central bakery — delivers one of the best commercial tiramisus on the Coronado peninsula, reliably, every time. The overall package is less exciting than Jolie and less polished than Sereãa, but more flexible than either — which is exactly the right value proposition for its role in Coronado dining.

Signature Dishes

The Vitello Tonnato — thinly sliced veal with tuna caper sauce — is the correct opener and among the best in San Diego County. Any handmade pasta listed as the day's special is worth ordering; the kitchen's pasta rotation is broader and more seasonal than the printed menu suggests. Osso Buco alla Milanese is the signature main for two to share. The wood-fired Branzino is a reliable secondary choice. Save room for Tiramisu; Il Fornaio's version has been consistent across locations and decades, and on a good day is among the best in the region.

The Room

The Coronado Il Fornaio occupies a beautiful two-level space with arched windows, warm terracotta flooring, and a covered outdoor terrace overlooking a small canal and marina. The main dining room seats around 120, the terrace adds another 40, and private event spaces handle groups up to 50. Lighting is warm without being dim. Acoustics favour conversation even when the room is full, which is a meaningful advantage for team dinners and milestone birthdays. The Italian-village atmosphere is more genuine than typical chain restaurants achieve, and the service staff are tenured enough to read the table well.
