Venetian Well

Venetian Well occupies a small, almost hidden square at the top of the Campiello district in Corfu Old Town — one of the oldest continuously inhabited parts of the island. The square is named for its well, a carved stone Venetian cistern donated to the city in 1699 by a wealthy Venetian merchant, which now sits directly in the centre of the restaurant's outdoor terrace. Around it, perhaps fifteen white-clothed tables spread beneath the magenta bougainvillea cascading down the yellow-ochre façade of the restaurant.

The cooking is modern Mediterranean with strong Corfiot anchors. An octopus carpaccio with citrus and olive oil is the classic opener; a local Ionian sea bass, filleted and served with fennel and preserved lemon, is the signature main. The kitchen's use of wild Corfiot herbs — fennel, marathon, dandelion greens — and local fish from the morning catch is the distinguishing characteristic of the menu. A dessert based on the Corfu kumquat (the small citrus the island produces uniquely in Greece) is the sweet the restaurant is known for.

The wine list is anchored in Greek producers — Santorini Assyrtiko, Naoussa Xinomavro, and a considered selection of Corfiot wines from the small producers on the island's western slopes — with a respectable stretch into Italian and French whites. The by-the-glass pours are unusually well-chosen for a restaurant of this scale.

The restaurant has been recommended by Jancis Robinson, Condé Nast, and most of the serious British and Italian travel press for over a decade. Service is quiet and unhurried; a dinner here typically runs three hours. Proposals and anniversaries are the regular order of summer service, and the staff handle them with the grace of a restaurant that has been doing so for years.

Venetian Well's square on a warm summer evening — with the bougainvillea in flower, the well lit by candles, and the stars over the Campiello rooftops — is among the most romantic proposal settings in Greece. The staff will arrange the ring-in-dessert, the champagne on a signal, or the private-moment pause between courses, whatever the evening requires. Book two months ahead for July.
