Brasserie des Ponts — French / Algerian, Constantine
Brasserie des Ponts occupies a street-level position at the base of the old city's bridge approach, its outdoor terrace facing the gorge access road and the first visible suspension of the historic Sidi Rached viaduct above. The setting is accidentally magnificent.
The menu is French brasserie with Algerian supplements: steak frites alongside lamb tagine, croque-monsieur alongside bourek, coffee and croissants at breakfast giving way to chorba and couscous at lunch. The kitchen navigates both traditions without embarrassment.
The coffee programme is excellent — Constantine has a coffee culture of depth, influenced by both French colonial café tradition and Arab-Berber coffee ritual. The café au lait at the Brasserie is the correct size, the correct strength, and served at the correct temperature.
The afternoon session — between 3pm and 6pm, when the midday rush has subsided and the evening crowd hasn't yet arrived — is the Brasserie's best hour. The gorge light in the afternoon has a quality worth experiencing with a coffee in hand.
Best Occasion: Great for First Dates
The brasserie format is naturally comfortable for first dates — familiar enough to be relaxing, specific enough to be interesting. The gorge view eliminates conversational dead spots entirely.
Best Occasion: Works for Solo Dining
Counter seats, a newspaper, and a café au lait with a view of the Sidi Rached viaduct. The correct Constantine morning for the solo traveller.
