Le Bardo Restaurant — Algerian / French, Constantine

Le Bardo occupies a restored Ottoman-era house in Constantine's historic medina, its dining room built around a central courtyard with carved plasterwork and zellige tilework that place it squarely in the aesthetic tradition of North African domestic architecture at its finest.

The kitchen produces a menu that navigates the Constantine tradition. Couscous with lamb and merguez, chorba (spiced soup), tajine preparations that reflect both Algerian and Berber influences. Alongside French bistro classics that reflect the city's colonial history. The mergez here are made in-house and are among the best in northeastern Algeria.

The gorge views from the upper terrace. The Rhumel River 200 metres below, the old suspension bridges visible on both sides. Provide a dining backdrop of genuine drama. Constantine is built over a ravine; Le Bardo uses this geography to maximum effect.

The wine list is modest by international standards and notable by Algerian ones, with selections from the Médéa and Mascara appellations. Algeria's own wine-producing regions, whose output is considerably better than their international profile suggests.
