The Verdict
The Gallery Café opened in 1998 in the Alfred House Road premises that were originally Geoffrey Bawa's architectural studio. Bawa — the 'father of tropical modernism' and architect of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, the Kandalama Hotel, and Lunuganga — designed the space himself and used it as his working office from 1963 until his death in 2003. The restaurant took over the building with Bawa's blessing and preserved the architecture, finishes, and garden entirely.
The dining room operates across three zones: the front room with the art gallery; the covered courtyard with its signature reflecting pool and frangipani trees; and the enclosed back dining room. Each is usable in different weather conditions (the courtyard, open-air, is the better-weather choice). The menu is contemporary Sri Lankan with international accents — Negombo crab cakes, Ceylonese black pork curry (the signature), Bawa lamb chops, and a Sri Lankan cheese board.
Pricing runs LKR 6,000–12,000 per person with moderate wine. The wine list is among the stronger in the country. The cocktail program — under a head barman with a serious mixology repertoire — is the establishment's secret; the signature Bawa cocktail (arrack, ginger, lime, curry leaf) is worth the visit alone. The gallery upstairs is free to browse pre- or post-dinner.
Why It Works for First Date
The Gallery Café occupies the former offices of Geoffrey Bawa — Sri Lanka's most celebrated architect and one of the 20th century's leading tropical modernists. The room (his) is the defining feature: cloister of plants and open-air dining, Bawa-designed furniture, the restaurant's art gallery running off the courtyard. For first dates and proposals that want the most characteristic Colombo room, this is the unambiguous choice.
Signature Dishes
Negombo crab and prawn cakes; Ceylonese black pork curry; Bawa lamb chops; mango mousse with cardamom.
