About L'Atelier du Peintre
L'Atelier du Peintre occupies a 15th-century building at the heart of Colmar's old town — a pair of carefully restored rooms with exposed oak beams, contemporary art on the walls (the 'painter's workshop' of the name is literal), and a kitchen visible through a small window at the back. The restaurant has held a Michelin star since 2018 and is run jointly by Loïc Lefebvre in the kitchen and Caroline Cordier in the dining room.
Lefebvre's cooking is inventive French — recognisably classical in its French-technique backbone but decorated with contemporary flourishes borrowed from Nordic and Japanese kitchens. Langoustines are served with saffron and pickled kumquat; a Bresse pigeon arrives roasted with its liver pâté and a jus of black garlic; seasonal vegetables from small Alsatian producers are always at the heart of the plate.
The tasting menus are the reliable way in — five courses at €95 for lunch, seven courses at €145 for dinner, with optional wine pairings built around producers Caroline has been working with for years. The list is strong in Alsace (naturally) but also in Burgundy and Jura; the by-the-glass pours change weekly and are consistently interesting.
The restaurant is small — perhaps 30 covers — and the atmosphere is intimate rather than grand. Caroline's service is one of the quietest pleasures in Alsatian dining: attentive without hovering, knowledgeable without lecturing. A window table on the ground floor is the one you want for a first date or proposal; the mezzanine above is slightly noisier but has the best view of the building's original timber ceiling.
Why It's Perfect for First Date
For a first date where the message is 'I chose a real room, not a concept', L'Atelier du Peintre is the answer in Colmar. The building itself is disarmingly beautiful — half a millennium of Alsatian craftsmanship before you even sit down — and Caroline Cordier's front-of-house work will give you permission to spend three hours at the table without ever feeling rushed.
