About Loggia Restaurante
Loggia sits on the open loggia of the Machado de Castro National Museum — the 16th-century former bishop's palace built on the foundations of a Roman cryptoporticus, which itself was the forum of Roman Aeminium. The restaurant is therefore perched, literally, on two thousand years of Portuguese history, and the terrace looks out over the entire lower city, the Mondego river, and the hills of Santa Clara to the west. It is the best single view in Coimbra.
The cooking is a confident reading of modern Portuguese. Rui Martins's menu is shorter than you would expect for the setting — perhaps eight starters and eight mains — and changes seasonally. Octopus carpaccio with black olive and smoked paprika is a reliable opener; the duck magret reduced in Dão wine and served with a seared fig is the main that makes regulars book back. The menu always includes at least one bacalhau and one leitão, because this is Coimbra.
The wine list sticks closely to Portugal, with particular strength in Dão and Bairrada producers. Glass pours are well-chosen; the by-the-bottle list is deep enough to accommodate a celebratory evening without being intimidating. The Pastel de Santa Clara — the Coimbra egg-yolk pastry that takes its name from the convent across the river — is the dessert you want, because the city itself insists on it.
The loggia terrace opens from April to October, weather permitting. Inside, the restaurant occupies two vaulted rooms of the museum's original palace, cooler in summer and more intimate in winter. The museum itself is free to visit with a reservation at Loggia — an hour before dinner, with a glass of white port, is the way to do it.
Why It's Perfect for First Date
For a first date where you want the setting to do half the work, Loggia is the answer. The view at sunset is disarming without being performative, the food is good enough to anchor a conversation, and the terrace is romantic without being forced. Ask for a table at the western edge of the loggia for the full sightline down to the Mondego.
