About Cabbages and Condoms
Cabbages and Condoms is a Chiang Rai branch of the famous Bangkok social-enterprise restaurant chain operated by the Population and Community Development Association (PDA). A Thai NGO founded in 1974 by Mechai Viravaidya to promote rural family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention. The restaurant uses condoms as decorative elements throughout the dining room (in lampshades, picture frames, and table centerpieces) as a social-conversation device, and 100% of restaurant profits fund PDA's rural-development programmes in Chiang Rai-Province villages.
The kitchen serves a combined northern-Thai-and-central-Thai menu. Sai oua northern sausage, larb moo, khao soi alongside pad thai, green curry chicken, tom yum kung, and a few innovative dishes (the famous 'Pol Pot Pourri' vegetable medley, the 'Cabbages and Condoms' salad). Prices are moderate (฿180-280 per dish; a meal for two with three dishes and beer runs ฿700-1,000). The restaurant is housed in a converted Lanna-style traditional house with bay windows facing the Hilltribe Museum next door.
The room seats sixty across two floors plus a small outdoor terrace overlooking the museum garden. Capacity is heavy when the museum is open (10am-6pm); the restaurant operates lunch-and-dinner with a quieter dinner service. Walk-ins always work.
