The Verdict
Le Crystal opened in 2006 on the Ping River's west bank, near Mengrai Bridge, in a custom-built glass-and-teak pavilion that seats 80 across three dining areas: the main dining room, a semi-private garden section, and the riverfront deck that fills first on any given evening. The restaurant is one of the city's most established formal rooms and a regular choice for the city's wedding-proposal industry.
The cooking is French with careful Thai inflections — pan-seared sea bass with Thai basil beurre blanc, beef tenderloin with green peppercorn, foie gras and pâté openings, tasting menus that reference the Riviera more than Paris. The kitchen's pastry program is strong: the mango cheesecake is a four-time menu survivor and the soufflé runs Tuesday through Saturday.
The wine list is the deepest in Chiang Mai — approximately 300 labels, strong on Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Rhône — with a generous by-the-glass program. Pricing runs THB 2,500–4,500 per person with moderate wine; tasting menus start at THB 2,800. Reservations for a riverfront table require specific request and deposit; the setting is the point, so do not skip this step. Dinner only, 6pm to 10:30pm.
Why It Works for Proposal
Le Crystal is the Chiang Mai proposal restaurant, and even locals who have never eaten there know the reputation. The dining room is a glass pavilion cantilevered over the Ping River, illuminated at night by lantern trees and the reflections off the water. The cooking plays second fiddle — confidently — to the setting, which is the exact right calibration for a once-in-a-lifetime dinner.
