The Verdict
Khao Soi Khun Yai — 'Grandmother's Khao Soi' — has operated for three generations on a quiet lane inside Chiang Mai's Old City moat, in a converted garden behind a teak house. The cooking is restricted almost entirely to the northern Thai canon: khao soi (the curried egg-noodle soup topped with crispy noodles), sai ua (the herb-and-chili coil sausage), nam prik ong (sweet tomato-pork chili dip), and a handful of stir-fries and grills.
The khao soi is the defining reason to come. The curry is thick, rich with turmeric and coconut cream, and built on a paste the family mixes fresh daily. The chicken version (gai) is the standard; the beef (nuea) is deeper and richer and runs out first. The crispy fried egg noodles on top are house-made. Condiments — pickled mustard greens, raw shallots, lime, roasted chili oil — are on the table and should be used.
Hours run roughly 10am to 2pm daily; the restaurant closes when the soup sells out, which typically happens between 1pm and 1:30pm on weekends. Arrive by 11:30am on a Saturday to be seated. The room is open-air, shaded by a mango tree, and operates entirely in cash. A full meal for two — two bowls of khao soi, a coil of sai ua, a plate of vegetables, water — runs about THB 250.
Why It Works for Solo Dining
No one closes a deal over khao soi, but the right kind of client dinner ends at Khun Yai for an early lunch the next day — the city's best-known northern noodle, served at a garden table under a mango tree, for about USD 3 a bowl. Taking a client here says something specific: you know Chiang Mai well enough to skip the guidebook rooms.
