"A six-floor 1980s film set you can eat your way through — Changsha's spicy crayfish landmark, built for a curious solo wander."
About Super Wenheyou
Super Wenheyou opened in 2018 inside Haixin Plaza on Xiangjiang Middle Road, the flagship of the Wenheyou brand that street-food vendor Wen Bin grew from a single fried-snack stall. Across six storeys it recreates the worn shopfronts, neon and tiled stairwells of 1980s Changsha — a walk-in stage set where every floor is lined with food counters.
It is less a restaurant than a themed market, and it has become one of the most photographed places in Hunan, drawing long queues from the moment it opens.
The Kitchen
The plate to order is the old-Changsha spicy crayfish (kouwei xia), heaped and slick with chilli and garlic, eaten with gloves and a beer. Around it sit the city's other classics: deep-fried stinky tofu black with fermented brine, snail soup, fried shrimp tails and lard rice. The cooking is street-stall food rather than refined dining, and that is the point.
Most dishes land around RMB 30–120, with a tray of crayfish for a table sitting at the upper end.
The Room
The setting is the headline. Reconstructed lanes, a barber shop, a cinema front and a faux river run through dim, smoky floors connected by crowded staircases — deliberately disorienting, like a maze. Expect noise, queues and a ticketed number for the busiest counters.
For a calmer sit-down Hunan meal, Xihu Lou is the more traditional banquet alternative.
Best for a Solo Food Adventure
Super Wenheyou rewards a curious solo diner with time to wander — grab a number for crayfish, graze the stalls and photograph the floors. It also works for a high-energy birthday outing with friends who want spectacle as much as supper.
Not for
Not for a quiet, refined dinner, anyone short on patience for queues, or diners who want table service — this is a loud, crowded themed market.
