About Fortaleza do Guincho

Fortaleza do Guincho is a converted 17th-century fortress perched on the cliff above Praia do Guincho, ten minutes west of Cascais town. The Relais & Châteaux property holds one Michelin star continuously since 2001 — one of the longest-running starred restaurants on the Iberian peninsula — and is the only restaurant of serious ambition on the wild Guincho coast. Chef Gil Fernandes took the kitchen in 2019 and has sharpened the style toward Portuguese coastal produce: Azorean tuna, Setúbal red mullet, Alentejo pork, and the percebes that divers bring up off Cabo da Roca every morning.

The panoramic dining room holds roughly 50 covers and faces due west over the Atlantic. Two tasting menus run: Memórias (seven courses, €165) and Experiência (nine courses, €205), both with optional wine pairings from a 350-label list that skews heavily Portuguese and rewards exploration — Pêra-Manca reds, Quinta do Noval vintage port, and small-grower Vinho Verde that never leaves the country in quantity. The à la carte option runs €140–180 per person before wine.

Signature dishes include a raw Atlantic carabineiro with sea lettuce and citrus, a slow-cooked turbot with Algarve razor clams, and a pre-dessert of lemon verbena ice over Setúbal moscatel. The sommelier will find you a 2011 Barca Velha if you ask nicely. Service is formal without being stiff; reservations are essential, especially for sunset tables, and a jacket is expected for men at dinner.

Dinner for two with paired wines runs €480–600 including service. The hotel's Spot restaurant on the ground floor is the casual alternative — same kitchen, shorter menu, €55 per person for three courses — if you want to taste the team without the full commitment.

Why It's Perfect for Proposal

Fortaleza do Guincho is engineered for the proposal. The fortress setting, the cliff, the Atlantic framed by stone arrow-slits, the candle light and the tasting-menu tempo all work in one direction. Request the window table a week in advance, time the ring for sunset, and know that the captain has seen it done a hundred times and will make it disappear if you want that.
