My fortieth birthday in Cartagena. We had twelve people on the rooftop just before sunset. The sky went orange and pink over the walled city. Everyone was holding a cocktail. The seafood that came out over the next two hours was spectacular — the shrimp preparation in particular. I've had birthdays at much more expensive restaurants that delivered far less. This was perfect.
I took a chance on the rooftop for a first date with someone I'd met at a conference. We arrived just before the sun went down and the view did about half the work for me. The cocktails were creative and genuinely good — not just decorative. The octopus dish was outstanding. She told me later it was the best first date she'd ever had. I take some credit, but the restaurant deserves more.
