Le Grottelle. Where the Island Feeds Itself
Le Grottelle occupies one of Capri's most extraordinary dining settings: a trattoria built into the limestone caves just meters from the Arco Naturale, the colossal rock arch that has stood sentinel over the eastern shore for millennia. The Vuotto family has operated here since the 1930s when Pasquale Vuotto began offering travelers wine and bruschetta from what was then a simple stable. His daughter-in-law Rosa, known as Mamma Rosa, transformed the kitchen into a destination that now draws pilgrims who trek the 15-minute path from La Piazzetta specifically for her recipes.
Half the restaurant exists inside the cave itself. The kitchen built into its rocky hollow. While the terrace extends outward to encompass a sweeping panorama across the Tyrrhenian Sea toward the Amalfi Coast, the Galli islands, and on crystalline days, as far as Calabria. The famous ravioli capresi. Pasta pillows filled with ricotta and marjoram. Arrive dressed in the simplest tomato and basil sauce, every component local, every bite an argument for the supremacy of restraint. Fusilli with shrimp and zucchini, sautéed clams, and the prized pezzogna (a local red bream) round out a menu that changes with what the island offers.
The walk to reach Le Grottelle is itself part of the ritual: a winding path through Mediterranean scrub that strips away the noise of the Piazzetta with each step. By the time you arrive, you're ready to appreciate what Capri actually is beneath the glamour. A wild, ancient place where rock and sea have been feeding people for centuries.
Reservations must be made by phone. Call ahead. The tables on the outer edge of the terrace. With unobstructed sea views. Go first. Arrive hungry. Arrive with people you want to stay at the table with for hours. There is no rushing Le Grottelle.
The Ultimate Group Table
The cave setting, the shared plates, the multi-hour unwinding that happens naturally on this terrace. Le Grottelle is built for collective dining. Groups leave behind their usual table dynamics. The hike to get here, the cave backdrop, the views over the open sea. All of it conspires to make a team dinner something genuinely memorable. Pass the ravioli. Refill the local Campanian white. Stay until sunset turns the sea gold.
