Peter Shields Inn

Cape May Magazine Best Romantic Restaurant — Beachfront Colonial Revival New American — Coastal $$$$ Beach Avenue — East End Oceanfront, Cape May

A 1907 Colonial Revival mansion directly opposite the Atlantic on Beach Avenue. The dining room and front-porch tables face the ocean — Cape May's most considered proposal address for three decades.

The Restaurant

Peter Shields Inn occupies a fully restored 1907 Colonial Revival mansion at 1301 Beach Avenue, on the East End of Cape May directly opposite the Atlantic Ocean and a half-mile from the Washington Street Mall. The building was constructed by Peter Shields, the wealthy steel-industry executive who is credited with planning the East Cape May beach district itself, and the architecture — three-storey gabled front, wraparound veranda, leaded windows facing the sea — has been preserved through successive ownerships since the property was converted into an inn in 1986. The dining room seats sixty-eight across a glassed-in front parlour, a more intimate centre room with a working fireplace, and the wraparound porch which seats sixteen in season. Every front-facing seat looks directly out at the Atlantic.

The kitchen cooks New American at a serious coastal register — the executive chef and his sous-chef team run a daily-rotating à la carte menu alongside a four-course tasting at $95 that is the way most of the inn's regulars take the room. Signature compositions across recent menus have included the inn's now-famous Lobster Crab Cakes (jumbo lump crab and Maine lobster bound minimally, finished with a tomato beurre blanc), a Seared Day Boat Scallops preparation with brown-butter cauliflower purée, a South African Lobster Tail in drawn butter served tableside, a dry-aged Filet Mignon with a Cabernet reduction, and a Rack of Lamb with a herb crust that has been on the menu since the 1990s. Desserts run to a classic New York cheesecake and a warm chocolate torte that the kitchen has refined across two decades.

The setting is the differentiator. The veranda tables in season — particularly the corner two-tops with the unobstructed Beach Avenue ocean view — are among the most consistently requested romantic tables on the Mid-Atlantic coast, and the inn's reservation team is well practiced at quietly tagging a table for a proposal evening. The wine list is shorter than the Washington Inn's but thoughtfully chosen — approximately two hundred and twenty references with careful depth in California Pinot Noir, sparkling wine (the inn keeps a champagne refrigerator visible from the dining room), and the Loire Valley whites that pair with the kitchen's seafood programme. BYO is permitted with a corkage fee. For a beachfront proposal evening with a kitchen that handles the occasion as a matter of routine, this is Cape May's first answer.

Primary Occasion

Why This Is Cape May’s Proposal Pick

For a proposal in Cape May, Peter Shields Inn delivers what almost no urban restaurant can manufacture: a working oceanfront, the architecture of a 1907 Colonial Revival mansion, and a dining room that has handled engagement evenings every weekend for thirty years. The reservation team is experienced at the practical choreography — a particular veranda table held by request, the ring secured by a server during cocktails, a discreet champagne service after the proposal — and will work directly with guests to plan the moment. The Atlantic itself does most of the staging: a corner table on the wraparound porch at golden hour, the sound of the surf, a half-bottle of vintage Champagne. The kitchen's four-course tasting structure gives the evening a natural arc without rushing the table. And the inn's seven en-suite guest rooms upstairs allow the obvious continuation — a celebratory breakfast on the same veranda the following morning, the Atlantic still doing its work.
