Commercial Street Vegetarian / Moringa Plates from a few cedis

A vegetarian social-enterprise kitchen near Cape Coast Castle that funds a trades school — honest moringa cooking, not a white-tablecloth room.

About Baobab House

Baobab House is a small vegetarian restaurant on Commercial Street in central Cape Coast, between the Castle and the market. It was set up in 2008 as a social enterprise: the kitchen, shop and guesthouse generate funds for the Baobab Children Foundation and the Baobab School for Trades and Traditional Arts, and much of the staff trained at the school. The head cook, Madame Christine, works the kitchen with a small team.

The food is entirely vegetarian, with plenty of vegan options. Dishes built on fresh tofu, soy and wheat chunks or oyster mushrooms are the speciality, alongside vegetable pies and wholewheat banana and coconut cakes. The drink to order is the fresh pineapple-moringa juice, with the restaurant's own moringa leaf grown for the purpose. Prices are low — most plates sit in the low tens of cedis, and a coffee runs about 9 GH₵.

The Room

The room is a simple, airy space above the Baobab shop, decorated with crafts made at the school and a short walk from the Castle. It is a daytime, casual place rather than a polished dining room, and it doubles as a calm refuge from the busy town centre outside.

Why It's Good for Solo Dining

It is an easy, worthwhile solo stop: a quiet table, a genuinely good vegetarian plate and a fresh moringa juice, with the bonus that the bill supports a local school. For a traveller between Castle visits, it is the most distinctive independent kitchen in town and welcoming to a table for one.

Not For

Not for anyone after meat, alcohol or a formal fine-dining evening — Cape Coast has no white-tablecloth rooms, and Baobab House is a budget, vegetarian, daytime social enterprise, not a special-occasion restaurant.
