The Room
River Café opened in 1991 on Prince's Island in the Bow River. A converted boathouse with a stone fireplace, exposed beams, and a covered patio that runs the river view in summer. Sal Howell built the room as Canada's first farm-to-table fine dining restaurant; Andrew Winfield runs the kitchen now and has held the wood-fired Canadian programme for over a decade. The dining room seats 90 across the main floor and the patio.
Service is brigade-Canadian, formal but warm. Booking three to four weeks ahead for weekend dinner.
The Food
The kitchen runs an aggressive Canadian sourcing programme. BC spot prawns, Alberta lamb, prairie pulses, Ontario duck, BC truffle in season. Through a wood-fired open kitchen. The chef's tasting at $140 is the best way to navigate the menu; the pairing programme rewards the diner who knows BC and Niagara wine.
Wine programme is one of the deepest in Western Canada. Niagara, Okanagan, BC and Ontario sit alongside the standard French and Italian benches.
Best Occasion Fit
Proposal: The patio at River Café in summer, with the Bow flowing past, is the most romantic two-top in Calgary. Notify the staff at booking; the kitchen and floor will arrange the moment.
Birthday: River Café handles birthdays with quiet polish. A candle on the dessert, a signed menu, the captain's acknowledgement at the table.
Impress Clients: International visitors recognise the Prince's Island setting and the farm-to-table heritage without translation. The chef's tasting is the meal that frames Calgary correctly.
