About Kazoku
Kazoku put New Cairo on the regional dining map, landing at No. 24 on MENA's 50 Best Restaurants in 2024. The name means "family" in Japanese, and the restaurant runs a contemporary Japanese menu of small plates, sushi, and a seasonal omakase out of the Swan Lake Compound. In a city where high-end Japanese has long meant hotel dining rooms, Kazoku is the standalone destination that diners cross town and fly in for, and the kitchen has the awards to back the trip.
The Kitchen
The menu is built with award-winning chef Reif Othman, working alongside executive chef Mostafa Gabr, and it rotates with the season. The dishes that define it are local and precise: smoked Nile bass sashimi with tamarind ponzu and toasted sesame, black-garlic wagyu tataki seared over charcoal, and a citrus-miso eggplant glazed with white miso and lemon. The omakase is the way to eat it, a guided run of the kitchen's best work. Expect to spend from about E£1,000 per person, more at the counter.
The room is dark, modern, and low-lit, built around an open counter where the omakase plays out in front of you. Sound sits at a low hum away from the bar, livelier near it; the counter seats are the ones to request for the full experience. Tables are well spaced, service is polished and well-briefed, and the dress code is smart. It reads as a serious, design-led restaurant rather than a casual sushi stop, which is exactly the register for a client dinner.
Best for Impressing a Client
Book Kazoku to impress a client because it carries a credential the room will recognise: a place on MENA's 50 Best and a menu shaped by a name chef. The omakase counter gives you a structured, high-touch evening where the kitchen does the talking, the local-Japanese dishes give you something distinctive to discuss, and the design-led room signals that you chose carefully. Reserve the counter several days ahead, brief the team on timing, and let the smoked Nile bass and the charcoal wagyu carry the meeting.
Not for
Not for a budget dinner or big groups. Kazoku is a splurge from about E£1,000 per person, and the omakase counter seats only a handful at a time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kazoku worth it?
Yes, if contemporary Japanese is what you are after in Cairo. Kazoku reached No. 24 on MENA's 50 Best Restaurants in 2024, and the cooking, shaped by chef Reif Othman, backs it up with dishes like smoked Nile bass sashimi and charcoal wagyu. From about E£1,000 per person it is a serious spend, but for a special dinner or a client you need to impress it is among the best in the city.
How hard is it to book Kazoku?
Moderate to hard for the counter. The omakase counter seats only a few, so reserve several days ahead, especially for weekends. Regular tables are easier on weeknights. Book through the Kazoku site or by phone, and specify the counter if you want the omakase rather than the à la carte room.
What is the dress code at Kazoku?
Smart. This is a design-led, upscale restaurant, so smart-casual at a minimum and many diners dress up, particularly for the counter or a client dinner. There is no formal jacket rule, but turning up underdressed will feel out of step with the room. Aim for the level you would bring to a fine-dining dinner.
What should I order at Kazoku?
Order the omakase if the counter is available; it is the best way to see the kitchen's range. À la carte, the smoked Nile bass sashimi with tamarind ponzu and the black-garlic wagyu tataki are the signatures, and the citrus-miso eggplant is the standout vegetable dish. Trust the chef on seasonal specials, which change regularly.

Occasion: Impress Clients
Took a Gulf client to the counter and the omakase did exactly what I needed. The smoked Nile bass was a genuine surprise and the wagyu tataki was as good as anything I have had in Dubai. It is expensive for Cairo, but the room and the 50 Best name made the right impression. Book the counter, not a table.

Occasion: Birthday
Celebrated a birthday here and the kitchen looked after us. The citrus-miso eggplant converted the one skeptic at the table. The room is dark and stylish, more date-night than family dinner despite the name. Pricey, but it felt like an occasion from start to finish.
Reserve through the Kazoku site or by phone. The omakase counter is limited; book several days ahead for weekends.
