About Box-E

Box-E occupies a converted shipping container at Bristol's Wapping Wharf development, a detail that would be gimmicky in less confident hands. Chef Elliot Lidstone runs a kitchen that punches extraordinarily hard for its scale — twelve covers, no reservations after a certain point, and a menu of small plates that changes with what Lidstone's suppliers deliver each morning.

The Michelin Bib Gourmand recognises exactly what Box-E delivers: great food at prices that don't require a business case. Plates arrive at pace, sized for sharing and priced for reordering — a natural prawn with pickled cucumber and buttermilk; short rib with bone marrow butter and heritage carrots; a small cheese course that manages to feel considered rather than cursory.

The wine list is short, well-chosen, and sympathetically priced. The space is social — you will likely be within earshot of your neighbours — which makes it entirely wrong for confidential conversations but exactly right for dates, birthday groups, and solo diners who want warmth rather than solitude. Box-E is one of Bristol's most loved rooms because it is entirely unpretentious about being excellent.

Best Occasion Fit

Box-E is a confident first-date choice. The setting is relaxed enough to dissolve nerves; the food is interesting enough to generate conversation; and the pace of small plates means the evening can extend naturally without the pressure of a set menu's timing.
