Vineria Cozzi

Vineria Cozzi opened in 1848 on Via Colleoni — the spine street of Bergamo Alta — and has been serving the city's wine and pasta lives ever since. It is the kind of place that survives because it deserves to: the bar front is lined with hundred-year-old glass cabinets, the back room seats twenty-four around wooden tables, and the cellar holds a serious Lombardy-focused wine list the fourth-generation owner will walk you through.

The menu is short and traditional. Casoncelli alla bergamasca with burnt butter and sage; polenta taragna with taleggio; braised donkey with rosemary; a tasting plate of local salumi that justifies its own trip. Portions are proper, the pasta is hand-made, and the kitchen has no interest in reinvention.

The bar — a marble-topped counter at the front of the room — is the best seat in Bergamo for solo dining. Order a glass of Franciacorta, a plate of salumi, a bowl of casoncelli, and let the owner pour things you did not ask for but will be glad you drank.

The wine list runs deep on Franciacorta, Valtellina Superiore, and small-production Bergamasca reds. Prices are neighbourhood-fair; glasses start at €4 for genuine quality.

Vineria Cozzi is Bergamo's solo-dining table of record. The bar counter treats single diners as the main event rather than an afterthought. The wine-by-the-glass list lets you make the meal an evening of tasting rather than a formal sitting. And the room, lit softly and filled with locals, is the city at its most comfortable with itself.
