About The Muddlers Club

Down a back lane off Waring Street, with no obvious sign, the Muddlers Club has held a Michelin star since 2020 — Belfast's only one for much of that run. Chef-owner Gareth McCaughey opened the room in 2015 and has cooked his way to the top of the city's table.

The format is a surprise tasting menu, around £100 a head, built on Irish produce and changing constantly. A wine flight runs about £35, or £50 for the prestige pairing. It anchors the fine-dining end of the Belfast dining guide.

The Kitchen

McCaughey's approach is plain-spoken: source the best Irish ingredients, cook them precisely, and resist overcomplication. The kitchen runs a surprise menu, so the courses shift with what the boats and farms send, but recent menus have leaned on Kilkeel scallops and Wicklow venison alongside foraged and fermented touches.

The cooking earned and has held one Michelin star since 2020, a rare distinction in Northern Ireland, and the room reads against the rest of the field in our restaurant rankings. Expect refined plates rather than fireworks, with the produce doing the talking.

The Room

The dining room is exposed brick and low light in a converted warehouse space, intimate and quietly buzzy rather than hushed. Tables are close enough to feel lived-in but spaced for conversation, the soundtrack stays low, and dress is smart-casual with no fuss. Service is warm and well-informed, walking each table through a menu they have not seen in advance.

Best for an Anniversary

Book the Muddlers Club for an anniversary because the hidden-lane entrance and the surprise menu turn the night into a small adventure, and the cooking is good enough to carry the occasion on its own. The room is intimate, the lighting kind, and the staff handle the moment without ceremony. Reserve well ahead, since the star and the small room mean weekends go first. The anniversary guide has more rooms worth the trip.

Not for

Skip the Muddlers Club if you need to know what you are eating in advance — it is a no-choice surprise tasting menu, so picky eaters and strict diets should call ahead or look elsewhere.

Frequently Asked

Is The Muddlers Club worth it?

Yes, for a special meal. The Muddlers Club has held a Michelin star since 2020 and is one of the best restaurants in Belfast, cooking a surprise tasting menu of top Irish produce for about £100. It is a destination dinner rather than a casual one, but the quality and the hidden-lane setting make it worth booking for an anniversary or a client night.

How hard is it to book The Muddlers Club?

Fairly hard. As Belfast's Michelin-starred room with a small dining space, the Muddlers Club books up well ahead, particularly Friday and Saturday. Reserve through the restaurant's website as far in advance as you can, and try a weeknight if weekends are gone. Cancellations sometimes open closer to the date.

How much is the tasting menu at The Muddlers Club?

The tasting menu is around £100 per person, with a wine flight at roughly £35 or a prestige pairing near £50. It is a set, no-choice surprise menu, so the price covers the full sequence of courses. Budget for the pairing if you want the room's full effect.

Where is The Muddlers Club?

The Muddlers Club is down Warehouse Lane, off Waring Street in Belfast's Cathedral Quarter, with a deliberately low-key entrance and no big sign. It is an easy walk from the city centre. Allow a moment to find the lane on your first visit, and see the Belfast dining guide for nearby tables.

Is The Muddlers Club good for an anniversary?

Yes. The intimate converted-warehouse room, the hidden entrance and the surprise menu make it a strong anniversary table, and the staff are practised at marking the occasion. Book ahead and mention the celebration. For other options see the anniversary guide.
