The Verdict

NUSARA begins on the rooftop. Champagne arrives as you take in the view — the golden chedis of Wat Pho lit against the night sky of Bangkok's oldest district, the Chao Phraya river catching the city's light below. This is the prologue to twelve courses that Chef Thitid "Ton" Tassanakajohn constructed as a portrait of his grandmother's cooking translated through the vocabulary of a chef who also holds a Michelin star at Le Du. The restaurant is named for that grandmother. The food is inseparable from that fact.

The tasting menu moves from delicate seafood preparations through a series of curries and stir-fries that reference the central Thai kitchen without being constrained by it. A Thai Wagyu stir-fry with holy basil arrives at a point in the meal when the appetite is precisely calibrated to receive it. A quartet of regional relishes — each representing a different province's flavour tradition — appears as a single course that is simultaneously educational and delicious. The olive-green interior with gold accents descends from the rooftop to a dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the temple view throughout.

NUSARA received its first Michelin star in the 2026 Thailand guide, completing a recognition that Bangkok's dining community had anticipated for two years. Chef Ton trained in the United States before returning to Thailand, and the synthesis he achieves — American culinary rigour applied to the Thai ingredient tradition — produces food that reads as simultaneously approachable and profound. The wine list includes natural wines and a selection of Thai fruit-based preparations that extend the local sourcing philosophy to the glass.

Why It Works for a Proposal

The combination of rooftop champagne overlooking Wat Pho and a twelve-course meal that is unambiguously special creates exactly the atmosphere a proposal requires. The restaurant is experienced enough to accommodate requests — a specific moment in the service, a prepared presentation, a bottle of something significant. The view does much of the work: few dining rooms in Bangkok produce this particular response. Inform the restaurant at the time of booking, and the service will construct the evening around the moment.
