About Sindang Reret

H.S. Hermawan and his wife Itje Sumartini opened Sindang Reret on Jalan Surapati in 1973, and over fifty years it has done more than feed Bandung — it codified what a modern Sundanese restaurant looks like. The name means roughly a place to pause and rest, and that is the pitch: long tables, a garden, and the Parahyangan cooking of West Java served the way families have eaten it for generations. There are four branches and two hotels now, but the Surapati room is the original.

The Kitchen

Sundanese cooking is built on freshness, raw vegetables and grilled protein, and Sindang Reret has spent half a century keeping that tradition legible rather than reinventing it. The kitchen grills freshwater fish — gurame and the local ikan mas — over charcoal, fries chicken to order, and pounds its own sambals. The dish the house is known for is gepuk, beef simmered until tender, pounded, sweet-spiced and fried, served with rice and a spread of lalapan raw vegetables and sambal.

This is not expensive cooking and it never pretended to be; a full table of grilled fish, gepuk, sayur and rice feeds a family for what one plate costs at a hotel. That accessibility is the point — it is essential Bandung eating, not an occasion splurge. The founders' family, PT Sindang Reret, still runs it, which is why the recipes have held for fifty-one years. The Room

The Surapati room is built for groups: long communal tables, a green garden setting, and the open, airy feel of a place meant for a crowd rather than a couple. Sound is cheerful and full — this is family dining, with children and several generations at the big tables — rather than hushed. Lighting is bright and daytime-friendly. There is no dress code; come as you are. Some branches add saung, the traditional thatched gazebos you sit in barefoot. The Surapati room seats well over a hundred.

Best for a Family Birthday

Book Sindang Reret for a big family birthday because it is built for exactly that: long tables that seat three generations, a garden the children can roam, and a spread of grilled fish, gepuk and rice that everyone from a grandparent to a toddler will eat. The cost stays gentle even for a large group, the service is used to feeding crowds, and the saung gazebos at the larger branches make a celebration feel like an occasion. Order family-style and let the table share.

Not for

Not for an intimate, hushed dinner for two — this is bright, busy, group-oriented family dining, so a couple after a quiet candlelit evening should look elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sindang Reret worth it?

Yes, as the most reliable introduction to Sundanese cooking in Bandung. Since 1973 it has set the template for the modern Sundanese restaurant, and the gepuk, grilled gurame and house sambals are honest and consistent. Prices are gentle, especially for a group. Come for traditional West Javanese food served family-style in a garden; come expecting fine dining or a quiet room for two and you will want somewhere else.

How hard is it to book Sindang Reret?

Not hard. The Surapati restaurant seats well over a hundred and takes reservations by phone, which is worth doing for a large group, a weekend lunch, or a birthday when the garden tables fill. Walk-ins are normal on weekdays. For a celebration, call ahead and ask about the saung gazebos at the larger branches, which need booking.

What is the dress code at Sindang Reret?

There is no dress code. This is relaxed, family-oriented Sundanese dining in a garden setting, so casual clothes are the norm and comfort matters more than style. If you plan to sit in a traditional saung gazebo you will be barefoot on a raised platform, so wear shoes that slip off easily.

What should I order at Sindang Reret?

Order the gepuk, the sweet-spiced fried beef the house is known for, and a whole grilled gurame or ikan mas from the charcoal. Add nasi, a plate of lalapan raw vegetables, the house sambal and some sayur asem, then eat it all family-style. It is the classic Sundanese spread, and sharing is how the food is meant to be enjoyed.

Diner Reviews

Occasion: Birthday

Booked a long garden table for my mother's birthday and it was perfect for three generations. The gepuk and grilled gurame disappeared fast, the kids had room to move, and the bill for a big group was very reasonable. A Bandung classic for good reason.

Occasion: Team Dinner

Brought a work team here and family-style was the right call. Everyone found something, the sambals were excellent, and the garden setting made it feel relaxed rather than corporate. Easy to book for a crowd and easy on the budget.
