About Zum Sternla

Zum Sternla has stood on Lange Straße since 1380, which makes it the oldest Wirtshaus in Bamberg — a city already famous for beer. Uwe Steinmetz took over as proprietor in 1999 and bought the house in 2009, running it as a working Franconian inn rather than a museum piece. Since 2019 it has brewed its own beer on the premises.

The food is honest Franconian fare: the plate to order is Schäuferla, the roast pork shoulder with crackling, served around €10.90 with most mains landing between €10 and €20. The house Sternla Helles Export and Bernstein-Märzen pour straight from the tank, joined by rotating seasonal brews, and a Seidla beside a Schäuferla is the local order.

The Room

The Sternla keeps its old gatehouse character: an arched serving window, low-ceilinged Gaststube rooms with space for groups, and a large beer garden looking onto the brewhouse. It sits in Bamberg's UNESCO old town at Lange Straße 46, an easy stop on a walk through the Inselstadt, with the kitchen open from late morning into the evening.

Why It's Good for Team Dinner

A long table, fresh tank beer and plates of Schäuferla make this an easy room for a group that wants to relax rather than perform. The beer garden absorbs a crowd in summer, the prices keep a round affordable, and the brewery tours and tastings give a team something to do together beyond the meal.

Not For

Not for a quiet fine-dining date or anyone after a tasting menu — this is a busy, beer-first Franconian brewpub, loud and convivial by design.

Common Questions

How old is Zum Sternla? Zum Sternla is documented back to 1380, which makes it the oldest Wirtshaus in Bamberg. The house passed to the City of Bamberg after 1500, and a full record of its owners and innkeepers survives. Its own brewery, added in 2019, is by contrast very new.

Who runs Zum Sternla? The proprietor is Uwe Steinmetz, who took over the inn in 1999 and bought the property in 2009, developing it into a working Franconian brewpub. There is no celebrity chef; the draw is traditional cooking and house beer rather than a single named kitchen talent.

What should I eat and drink at Zum Sternla? Order the Schäuferla, the Franconian roast pork shoulder, which runs about €10.90, with most other mains between €10 and €20. To drink, the house Sternla Helles Export and Bernstein-Märzen are brewed on site and tapped from the tank, with rotating seasonal beers alongside.
