About La Terrazza at Tharabar Gate
La Terrazza is the dining terrace of the Tharabar Gate Hotel, a 65-room boutique property built against the 11th-century eastern wall of Old Bagan. The terrace looks directly at the floodlit Thatbyinnyu Temple — the tallest temple in Bagan — and the view at dusk is among the most cinematic in the archaeological zone. The restaurant took the unusual position of running an Italian rather than Burmese menu; the logic was to give hotel guests a non-curry option on long stays, and the kitchen has grown into the brief over the years.
Signatures include a wood-fired pizza section that is genuinely competent (the dough is rested 48 hours and the oven reaches proper temperature), a handmade tagliatelle with butter and herbs, a grilled Ayeyarwady river fish with lemon and olive oil, and a tiramisu made to traditional proportions. The kitchen also runs a small Burmese section for guests who do want local food — the tea-leaf salad is a respectable version.
Service is hotel-standard: slightly more formal than elsewhere in Bagan, with tablecloths, proper glassware, and a wine list that includes Italian imports (Chianti, Pinot Grigio) alongside Red Mountain Estate. Cocktails are well-made; the bar separate from the dining terrace for pre-dinner drinks.
Dinner service is the move — the terrace is at its best after dark when the temple is floodlit. Allow 2 hours. Dinner only from 18:00; reservations strongly advised in dry season.
Why It's Perfect for Proposal
La Terrazza is Bagan's proposal room. The floodlit Thatbyinnyu temple from the terrace is as dramatic as any proposal setting in Southeast Asia, the Italian menu gives you a format that doesn't require explanation, and the hotel staff can arrange quiet table service and (discreetly) a ring presentation. Book 10 days out and request a corner terrace table. For first dates and birthdays, the same principle at a lower intensity works well.
