About Casino Ras Al Ain
The Ras El Ain spring area sits just south of the Baalbek ruins — a natural spring that has flowed since Roman times, forming small pools and channels that local restaurants build terraces over. Casino Ras Al Ain is the largest of them, a multi-level complex whose distinguishing feature is a glass floor section built directly over the spring water, letting diners see the rushing current beneath their tables.
The name Casino is a hangover from the Lebanese French-Mandate era — it does not refer to gambling, but to a grand riverside restaurant in the European sense, a type common in 1950s and 60s Lebanon and almost extinct now. The restaurant preserves an unusually intact period atmosphere: concrete-and-stone terraces over the water, plastic chairs with embroidered cushions, a wood-framed bar stocked with Almaza beer and Ksara wine, and a kitchen that has not significantly changed its menu in decades.
The cooking is solid Lebanese countryside — grilled freshwater trout from the spring itself (the signature dish), tabouleh, kibbe, lamb chops on the grill, and a decent sfiha. The trout is the move: caught minutes before it arrives, grilled whole, served with a garlic-lemon sauce and grilled vegetables. Around $16 including mezze. The mezze plates are large and designed for sharing.
Allocate 2 hours. The best tables are on the lower terrace with the spring running directly underfoot. Bring a light jacket in spring and autumn — the spring water cools the air noticeably. Closed some weeks in winter; call the Baalbek tourism office to confirm.
Why It's Perfect for First Date
Casino Ras Al Ain is a first-date room in the old Lebanese sense — the running water, the preserved 1970s riverside atmosphere, the freshwater trout straight from the spring, the complete absence of pretension. It is also the most unexpectedly romantic setting in Baalbek outside the Palmyra balcony. For team dinners, the upper terrace accommodates groups of 10–20 with views over the full spring complex. Walk-in is fine; the restaurant rarely turns anyone away.
