Spondi

Athens, Greece Contemporary French / Mediterranean $$$$ ★ Michelin

Athens' most romantic Michelin room: a 19th-century neoclassical townhouse with a flower-dotted courtyard 100 metres from the Parthenon. Michelin-starred since 2002. The city's enduring standard of excellence.

About Spondi

In a city now celebrating its Michelin renaissance, Spondi is the original. When the Guide awarded its first star in 2002, it was doing something almost radical: declaring that Athens could produce fine dining worthy of European recognition. More than two decades later, Spondi continues to justify that declaration with an elegance that newer restaurants can admire but not replicate — the quiet authority that only comes from decades of consistent, focused excellence.

The setting is the first act of seduction. Housed in a handsome 19th-century neoclassical townhouse in the Pangrati neighbourhood — a residential quarter east of the National Garden — Spondi occupies three floors of vaulted dining rooms plus, in warmer months, a courtyard that is simply one of the most beautiful outdoor dining spaces in Europe. Flowers and small trees soften the stone walls. Crystal chandeliers cast ambient light. The tablecloths are crisp, the service genuinely warm, and the Parthenon is visible from the street outside. One hundred metres from the most recognisable monument in the ancient world, Spondi operates entirely on its own terms.

The cuisine is contemporary French-Mediterranean with a strong Greek ingredient foundation. The kitchen offers an à la carte menu, a tapas menu at €69 (or €80 with two glasses of wine), and the Discovery tasting menu at €128 (€157 with four matched glasses of wine). The Discovery is the obvious choice for anyone arriving with time and intent: a sequence of highly visual, elaborately constructed dishes that synthesise French technical rigour with Greek provenance — octopus, Aegean fish, lamb from the Greek highlands, citrus from island groves. The wine list is exceptional, running deep into Greek appellations that rarely appear on international lists.

The vaulted cellar, with its stone walls and candlelight, is the most requested dining space for special occasions — and the most booked. Reservations at Spondi require planning: the restaurant fills weeks ahead during the spring and summer high season. The courtyard tables go first. Book early, specify your preference, and do not arrive expecting spontaneity to substitute for preparation.

Best Occasion Fit

Spondi is Athens' pre-eminent Proposal restaurant. The vaulted candlelit cellar, the flower-filled courtyard, the proximity to the Parthenon, the Michelin pedigree — every element conspires to make a proposal feel inevitable rather than improvised. For a First Date with serious intent, Spondi sends the message that you understand what a city's finest table means.
