About Osanai Shokudo
Osanai Shokudo opened in 1968 in this Furukawa-area address (six blocks west of Aomori Station, three blocks from the Nokkedon Market) and has served Aomori family-diner cuisine in the same room for fifty-seven years. The restaurant is the city's quintessential local lunch counter. The kind of place that doesn't appear in tourist guides but that every Aomori-resident salaryman has eaten at in his career.
The signature is the Hotate Set at ¥1,400. Three large Mutsu Bay scallops grilled in butter on the open kitchen plancha, served with rice, miso soup, three small banchan-style side dishes (julienned daikon, namul mountain vegetables, pickled cabbage), and a small portion of the day's grilled fish. The premium Hotate-and-Tuna Set adds three pieces of Oma tuna sashimi and runs ¥2,200; the lunch tasting set with five small dishes is ¥1,800.
The room is functional. Twenty-eight seats at a counter and small tables, white-tiled walls, the kitchen visible at the back, fluorescent lighting. Walk-ins outside the 12-1:30 lunch peak work; the queue at peak is short. Cards are accepted; the menu is in Japanese with photographs.
What makes Osanai Shokudo worth the visit beyond its price is the consistency of the scallops. The kitchen sources directly from Mutsu Bay producers and the fish is genuinely better than equivalent Tokyo or Sapporo offerings. The family-diner format keeps the meal unselfconscious; this is the room you eat at when you want the actual Aomori lunch, not the tourist version of it.
Best Occasion Fit
Solo dining at its purest. Counter seat, twenty-minute meal, ¥1,400 bill, the scallops in their reference form. For first dates with locally-resident partners it works as the unselfconscious lunch anchor. Team dinners up to four work at the back tables.
