Middleton Tavern — American / Colonial, Annapolis

Middleton Tavern has operated at the head of Annapolis's main wharf since 1750 — through the Revolution, the Civil War, and every subsequent decade of American history. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin all visited. The tavern has been serving food and drink in this building since before the United States existed.

The menu is colonial American with modern execution — Maryland crab soup, rockfish, and the oyster stew that the Chesapeake has been providing to this address since the 18th century. The kitchen respects the historical context without being museum-like about it.

The raw oyster bar, operated from a station visible from the main room, provides the most direct connection to the Chesapeake Bay's most storied product. The local varieties — from the different tributaries of the Bay — are offered with sourcing specificity.

The historic building, the harbor view, and the knowledge that this specific room has hosted American history provides an atmospheric dimension that no amount of interior design can replicate.

Best Occasion: Great for Birthdays

The oldest continuously operating tavern in America, Chesapeake oysters, and the harbor visible outside — a birthday dinner that carries genuine historical weight.

Best Occasion: Works for Impressing Clients

Washington and Jefferson drank here. The Chesapeake oysters are from the bay visible from the window. The historical authority is real.
