About Whisky & Ramen

An open kitchen, a bar full of whisky, and a counter built the way ramen counters are built in Japan. Whisky & Ramen opened on West 4th Avenue in downtown Anchorage in 2022 and turned into the city's most talked-about room almost immediately. Ramen runs $20 to $22 a bowl, a full dinner with a cocktail lands around $35 to $55, and the seat to want is at the counter.

The Kitchen

Husband-and-wife owners Jon McNeil and Nicole Cusack built the room, and chef Mike Dodge runs the kitchen, named a 2026 James Beard Foundation semifinalist for Best Chef Northwest and Pacific. The draw is the ramen, bowls built on long-simmered stock and served $20 to $22, with a rotating board of Japanese small plates and one of the better cocktail and whisky programs in the state. Specialty cocktails run around $14, appetizers $5 to $13, and a full dinner sits between $35 and $55 per person. The room is at 436 West 4th Avenue downtown, the open kitchen and bar counter face the action, and the James Beard recognition is the clearest sign that the kitchen is operating well above the casual room it occupies. For the wider field, see our guide to the best Japanese restaurants worldwide and our breakdown of the seven signs of a great restaurant.

The Room

The counter is the point. The open kitchen runs the length of it, the bar pours whisky and cocktails to your right, and a solo diner can sit, watch the bowls come together, and never feel like they are taking up a table. It runs loud and lively on weekends and easier midweek, the lighting is warm, and there is no dress code worth naming. Downtown Anchorage arrives in whatever it has on.

Best for Solo Dining

Come to Whisky & Ramen for solo dining because the counter is engineered for it: a single seat at the pass is the best seat in the house, the open kitchen gives you something to watch, and a bowl of ramen plus a cocktail is a complete, unhurried dinner for one. No one looks twice at a solo diner at a ramen bar, which is exactly the point. For more of the city, see the Anchorage dining guide.

Not for

Not for a quiet, lingering tasting menu or a large group wanting a private table. This is a loud, counter-first ramen and whisky bar that turns seats on weekend nights.

Frequently Asked

Is Whisky and Ramen worth it?

Yes, it is one of Anchorage's best rooms right now. Chef Mike Dodge was named a 2026 James Beard Foundation semifinalist for Best Chef Northwest and Pacific, and the ramen, built on long-simmered stock, backs up the recognition. With bowls at $20 to $22 and a strong cocktail and whisky program, a full dinner around $35 to $55 per person delivers serious cooking in a casual downtown room.

How hard is it to book Whisky and Ramen?

Moderately hard on weekends. The room opened in 2022 to real fanfare and stays busy, so Friday and Saturday counter stools go first. Reservations are on OpenTable, and a few days' notice covers a weekend seat. The best move for one or two people is to come solo or as a pair and slide in at the counter, where the open kitchen seats turn over faster than the tables.

What should I order at Whisky and Ramen?

Order a bowl of ramen first, the backbone of the menu at $20 to $22 and the reason the place exists. Add a couple of the rotating Japanese small plates, which run $5 to $13, and let the bar steer you toward a cocktail or a pour from the whisky list. The kitchen changes the board regularly, so ask what is new before you settle on the standards.

Is Whisky and Ramen good for solo dining?

Yes, it is among the best solo seats in Anchorage. The counter faces an open kitchen, so a single diner gets the best view in the room and something to watch while they eat, and a bowl of ramen with a cocktail is a complete dinner for one. No one looks twice at a solo guest at a ramen bar, which makes it an easy, comfortable place to eat alone.
