The Verdict
Okto sits at the Harrat Viewpoint — the elevated volcanic-rock outlook above Habitas AlUla that looks out across the full Ashar Valley and, on a clear afternoon, the adjacent sandstone outcrops that form the backdrop to the resort's villas. The restaurant is open-sided, shaded, and built around a central open-flame grill.
The cooking is Greek and broadly Mediterranean, which is an unusual choice for the desert and for that reason works. The menu is built around the grill — whole bronzino, lamb chops, octopus, halloumi — with a mezze section (taramasalata, melitzanosalata, tzatziki) that is prepared to order rather than pre-plated. The ingredients are flown in from Greece and Turkey three times a week.
The restaurant functions primarily as a long-lunch destination — the afternoon light at the viewpoint is the reason the room exists — but it is also open through sunset for dinner. A full lunch runs around SAR 400 per person. The wine programme is again mocktail-only, though the Greek-herb fermentation work here (a rosemary-oregano shrub that stands in for a white-wine opener) is particularly good.
Why it works for Birthday
For a milestone birthday in AlUla — the fiftieth, the sixtieth — Okto at long-lunch length is the answer. The viewpoint delivers the landscape photograph the birthday guest will keep. The grill menu is celebratory and accommodates a mixed group's preferences. The open-fire cooking theatre provides a continuous low-level entertainment that prevents the long lunch from stalling.
