The Verdict

Maraya Social sits on the rooftop of the Maraya concert hall — currently the largest mirror-clad building in the world, and the cultural centrepiece of AlUla's Ashar Valley development. The building itself is an object of pilgrimage. The restaurant is the answer to what you do in AlUla after you have photographed the mirrors.

Jason Atherton — formerly of Pollen Street Social in London, Michelin-starred on both sides of the Atlantic, and one of the British chefs who have most seriously engaged with Gulf and Arabian cuisine — opened Maraya Social in 2022 and relaunched it in 2024. The format is a sharing-plate menu that draws deliberately on Mediterranean, Arabian, and British palates. The rooftop wraps the full circumference of the building and returns a 360-degree view of the Ashar Valley canyons that is, in every direction, the kind of landscape that makes even jaded luxury travellers stop talking.

The signature dishes cycle seasonally but consistently include a smoked lamb shoulder with date molasses, a Red Sea sea bass ceviche, a Cornish crab on sourdough with za'atar butter, and a short-rib slider that has travelled from the original Pollen Street menu. The drinks programme is mocktail-only (Saudi Arabia is dry), and the sophistication of the non-alcoholic pairings is genuinely notable — this is probably the most serious mocktail menu in the Gulf outside Dubai.
