The Verdict
Parmigiano has been the Italian reference restaurant in Almaty for over a decade. The flagship sits in the Almaly district on the corner of Kurmangazy and Panfilov — two of the city's most walkable streets — and occupies a two-storey restored townhouse with a garden terrace that, in summer evenings from late May through early September, is the most sought-after outdoor table in the city.
The cooking is precise, modern-Italian: pasta made fresh every morning in the open pasta station visible from the main dining room, a short and well-edited antipasti carte, and a secondi list built around wood-fired Tuscan steak, roast rabbit, and whole seabass. The dessert programme is conservative — tiramisu, panna cotta, a daily tart — and the bar opens to the garden for aperitivo with a Negroni list that takes the form seriously.
The wine list is the city's deepest Italian programme: Piedmont, Tuscany, and a growing Sicilian section. Prices are fair for the level; a dinner with a shared bottle runs around ₸25,000 per person. The service is the city's best — senior staff have been there for years, remember faces, and communicate in Russian, Kazakh, and English fluently.
Why it works for First Date
For a first date in Almaty, the garden terrace at Parmigiano in summer or the upstairs private dining room in winter is the answer. The cooking is universally appealing. The atmosphere is warm and conversational. The check will not land awkwardly — the restaurant is priced for a Thursday or a Saturday rather than a special-occasion spike. And if the date goes well, the next table at Parmigiano becomes the natural 'our place' for subsequent evenings.
