The Verdict
Nonya takes its name from the Peranakan culinary tradition of Malaysia and Singapore — the hybrid cuisine born from centuries of Chinese settlement in maritime Southeast Asia. In Ahmedabad, the restaurant uses this framework as a starting point for a broader exploration of Asian flavours, with Sichuan cooking forming the kitchen's most confident voice alongside Thai, Vietnamese, and Cantonese preparations.
The menu is built for exploration: small plates, sharing formats, and a confident use of chilli, aromatics, and fermented flavours that is relatively unusual in Ahmedabad's more restrained dining landscape. The Sichuan mapo tofu is made with the proper level of numbing heat; the kung pao preparations use Sichuan peppercorns that have been sourced, not approximated. The dim sum selection at lunch is the city's most reliable.
For the solo diner, Nonya's counter seating and small-plate format create a natural structure for an exploratory meal without the awkwardness of an oversized table. The kitchen is open and audible — there is life in the room that makes eating alone feel participatory rather than solitary.
Pricing: INR 800 to 1,400 per person. The weekday lunch set menus are exceptional value. Weekend evenings can wait; book ahead or arrive before 7:30pm.
Why It Works for Solo Dining
Nonya's counter seating, small-plate format, and kitchen energy make it Ahmedabad's strongest solo dining choice. The kitchen's visible activity and the menu's encouragement of exploration — try three dishes, build your own tasting menu — turn a solo dinner into something engaging rather than perfunctory.
