Daawat-e-Nawab Hotel Clarks Shiraz

Crystal chandeliers, hand-painted walls, live ghazal — Daawat-e-Nawab does Mughal court theatre without the Oberoi price.

The Verdict

Daawat-e-Nawab sits on the rooftop of Hotel Clarks Shiraz — an older property than the Oberoi or ITC, and one with a different kind of authority. Clarks Shiraz opened in 1961 and was for a long time the best hotel in Agra; that history is visible in the restaurant's stubborn commitment to the live-ghazal-and-chandelier formula that the younger properties have modernised away from.

The dining room is an explicit recreation of a Mughal court — carved wooden panels, hand-painted floral walls, crystal chandeliers, and a pair of ghazal singers performing on a low platform through dinner. The menu is Awadhi and Mughlai: slow-cooked dum biryanis, chicken changezi (a recipe the restaurant claims is its own), mutton rogan josh in the Kashmiri style, and a full range of kebabs prepared at a visible tandoor station.

The cooking is better than the hotel's three-star rating would suggest. The dal makhani is genuinely among the best in the city. The raan in yakhni sauce — a rare preparation of leg of lamb in a spiced yoghurt gravy — is worth ordering even if it does not appear on the printed menu; it is a chef's dish that requires advance notice. At ₹4,500 per person with a soft drink, Daawat-e-Nawab is the city's best-value white-tablecloth dinner.

Why it works for Birthday

For a birthday dinner with a group of eight to twelve — the size that breaks down at Esphahan's more intimate room — Daawat-e-Nawab is the correct answer. The staff will arrange a cake with advance notice. The ghazal singers will take requests. The food arrives generously and stays hot. Your group will not feel rushed even past 11pm, which is rare in Agra's hotel-dominated scene.
