"York's only Bib Gourmand since 2018: Bentinck's spice-literate small plates just inside Micklegate Bar. Book weeks out for a first date."
About Skosh
Neil Bentinck cooks around twenty-five small plates a night at 98 Micklegate, a few hundred yards inside York's twelfth-century bar gate, and has held the city's only Michelin Bib Gourmand since 2018. Plates run from a few pounds for a Lindisfarne oyster with cucumber and jalapeño granita to just under ten for miso-glazed hake with courgette, pickled lemon and sunflower-seed pesto; six or seven between two is the right pace. The early-2024 expansion added seats and subtracted none of the noise.
The Kitchen
Skosh comes from the Japanese sukoshi, a small amount, and the name is the whole manifesto: a long card of small plates that graze across continents with more spice literacy than anything else inside the city walls. Bentinck is chef-owner in the literal sense, on the pass most nights, and the menu rewrites itself constantly enough that regulars treat repeat visits as different restaurants. Michelin made it a Bib of the Month feature in 2025, the inspector's way of flagging the value as exceptional rather than merely good.
The plates to anchor on: the Lindisfarne oyster, whatever the current fish plate is doing with miso, and anything involving flatbread. Order in waves, not all at once. For the starred end of Yorkshire cooking, Roots carries the city's Michelin star at several times the spend, and Arras plays the quieter tasting-menu register. Our seven signs of a great restaurant explains why rooms with this much energy usually cook better than solemn ones.
The Room
Bright, lively and loud in the way that reads as appetite rather than chaos. The 2024 expansion stretched the room without diluting the buzz: close tables, an open kitchen line, lighting that stays up because nobody here is hiding. Solo diners are treated as a feature of the house, not an inconvenience. Dress code does not exist. Lunch Wednesday to Saturday, dinner to 10pm, Sunday lunch until mid-afternoon.
Best for a First Date
Book Skosh for a first date because the format does the work: shared plates force conversation, the room's noise covers nerves, and the bill never ambushes anyone at £35 to £60 a head. Order in two waves and let the menu supply the talking points. Midweek early-evening slots are the easiest landing. The global list is on the best restaurants for a first date guide; the rest of the city sits in the York dining guide.
Not for
Not for diners who want one large plate of Yorkshire beef and a quiet room. Skosh runs loud and fast, and plates land when ready, not in sequence.
Frequently Asked
Is Skosh worth it?
Yes. York's only Bib Gourmand since 2018 delivers the most interesting cooking in the city walls at neighbourhood prices: plates from a few pounds to about a tenner, with flavours that travel further than anything nearby. Michelin made it a Bib of the Month in 2025. Roots, the city's starred room, runs several times the spend.
How hard is it to book Skosh?
Weeks rather than days for weekend dinners; the 2024 expansion helped, but demand grew with it. Book through skoshyork.co.uk. Lunch sittings Wednesday to Saturday and Sunday lunch are the softer entries, and solo diners do best of all, since single covers slot in where pairs cannot.
What is the dress code at Skosh?
None. Skosh is bright, loud and casual; trainers are fine and most of the room wears them. York dresses up for the races, not for Micklegate small plates. Come comfortable, order more than you think you need, and leave the jacket at the hotel.
What does a meal at Skosh cost?
Plates run from a few pounds for a Lindisfarne oyster to just under £10 for the miso-glazed hake, and six or seven plates between two is the right pace. Two people eat broadly with drinks for around £70 to £110 total. The Bib Gourmand exists precisely because of this maths.
Is Skosh good for a first date?
Yes, among the best in the north of England for it. Shared plates force conversation, the noise covers nerves, and the bill stays friendly. Book an early midweek slot and order in waves. The full first-date ranking carries the global list.
