Warsaw's most civilised wine bar — natural wines, small plates, and a room designed for exactly the kind of slow evening that first dates should always be.
Kontakt is the wine bar that Warsaw's serious drinkers were waiting for. Opened by Piotr Pietras, Master Sommelier and former Director of Wine at London's HIDE, on Hoza Street in the Mokotow district, it offers something genuinely uncommon: a wine list of over 400 references, heavily weighted toward natural and biodynamic producers, assembled with the expertise of someone who has managed some of the most celebrated cellars in Europe.
The space across two floors has been designed with the same intelligence as the wine programme. The ground floor bistro has a neighbourhood warmth — bare brick, warm light, tables that encourage the kind of slow conversation that good wine produces. The lower level, with its bold blue colour scheme and murals by a local artist, creates a more deliberately festive atmosphere. A chef's table allows closer engagement with the kitchen, which produces small plates that are built to accompany rather than compete with what is in the glass: charcuterie of real quality, cheese sourced with the same rigour as the wine, small seasonal dishes that rotate with the list.
The service is knowledgeable without being intimidating — a rarity in wine-specialist settings where expertise can shade into performance. Pietras has built a team that genuinely wants to find you something you will love rather than something that demonstrates their knowledge. This is a meaningful distinction, and it makes Kontakt the kind of place you can visit without knowing anything about wine and leave knowing considerably more.
A wine bar is, in some respects, the perfect setting for a first date. The format — a glass, a small plate, the choice of whether to stay or move on — allows the evening to breathe and develop at its own pace rather than the pace imposed by a fixed menu. At Kontakt, the wine list becomes a conversation in itself: discovering what the other person drinks, asking the sommelier for guidance together, being surprised by what arrives. The room is intimate without pressure. The noise level is right. And the quality of what is in the glass means that even an evening that does not develop as hoped will still have been an excellent evening on its own terms.
