Smugglers has served as Vilankulo's backpacker and budget traveller institution for years, a beach restaurant attached to the town's original backpackers that produces peri-peri prawns and chicken at a price point that makes the Mozambican coast accessible to a wider range of visitors.
The peri-peri here is honest rather than refined, house-made chilli sauce applied with the confidence of a kitchen that has been doing it for years, served with fresh bread and a side of chips. It is not Bahia Mar's standard, but at a fraction of the price it represents exceptional value.
The beach setting, Vilankulo's white-sand shore with the Bazaruto channel visible, provides the same geography as the luxury alternatives. The plastic chairs and the cold 2M provide the accessible version of the same experience.
The evening campfire, lit on Fridays and Saturdays on the beach in front of Smugglers, creates the social atmosphere that makes the institution more than a restaurant. It is one of Vilankulo's most genuinely sociable regular events.
